Area Retreat Update #1

30 Sep

Hello sweet friends and family –

4 Years Later….
The picture above was taken 4 years ago at my first Area Retreat in Panama. It was at that retreat that this whole journey of joining the Global Youth & Family Ministry team began for me. Many of these students will be returning to this year’s area retreat. I am so excited to get to reconnect and continue the relationship that I started 4 years ago with these students.

On Saturday I head off to Mexico for the 2010 Latin America Area Retreat. I, along with the GYFM Team will be leading a team of 25 Youth Workers from all over the U.S. We have been planning a week-long retreat for all of missionary kids (4th grade – College) whose families serve in Latin America with Mission to the World.  Over the past 6 months hundreds of emails have been exchanged, talks have been written, games have been planned, and videos have been created.  All in the hopes that these missionary kids who attend this retreat will experience the love of their Heavenly Father in a new and exciting way.

Please keep us in your prayers as we “put feet” to all of this planning. We are all really excited about this trip and pray that this retreat will be a watershed time for these students and their relationship with the Lord.

Please also be praying for our health and safety as we travel.

I hope to send out several updates during the retreat to keep you up to date on all that the Lord is doing and let you know how you can be praying specifically. I’ll feature a different picture every update so you can really see what is going on.

I’m so thankful for each and every one of you.

In Him,

a series

A few weeks back my family, along with friend and photographer Bobbi Jo were having brunch at Sun in My Belly in Kirkwood. Kirkwood is a lovely neighborhood in Atlanta nestled near Decatur & Oakhurst and East Atlanta.  And Sun in my Belly is just delicious! While dining at Sun in my Belly – thanks to a scout mob coupon…..What’s scout mob you ask?

*start tanget*

Have I blogged about the wonder that is Scout Mob? No? I’m so sorry… Scout mob is a wonderful coupon service that is available in certain US cities that offers great deals on restaurants, shops and even some salons. No purchase is necessary, (unlike groupon) all you have to do is have the app on your iPhone or Droid and show the coupon when you pay. Most coupons are for 50% off! It has been a wonderful discovery! And very handy for one who likes to try new restaurants.

*end tangent*

My mother spotted a book called “Eat. Shop. Atlanta.

(in case you are looking for it the cover is actually more orange than the red depicted in this picture)

We scanned through the book and noticed lots of different restaurant suggestions featured in this book. My mother purchased a copy for us. (thanks mom!)

As we were eating our delicious brunch and looking more closely at the book a thought popped into my head…”How fun would it be to have do a series on my blog and try out all the different restaurants in this book!” So I told my sister that that’s what were were going to do and that’s what we are going to do.

So we will start in October (after I get back from Mexico) every Monday as our schedules allow. We are going to try out one of these places from the book. Not many restrictions are on us except for the fact that we are not allowed to order the same thing.

So off we go! I’ll try my best to take pictures of our dishes and update the blog as soon as we get home to let you know how it was…Also if anyone would like to join us you are MORE than welcome…The more the merrier in our opinion!

Stay tuned for the first post. I also need suggestions on what to call the series…give me your ideas…i promise to give you credit!

I’ve been in Florida all weekend visiting with family and going to my Great Aunt’s 75th Birthday.

One of the highlights has been getting to cuddle on this cute little punkin! Brandon is my cousin’s sweet baby boy…SO. MUCH. CUTENESS!

It’s been so good to get to hug on sweet brandon (and his mom and dad) in person instead of just oohing and aahing over pictures.

Can’t wait to stay with y’all again when we are in Orlando in a couple of weeks!

PS – another funny, albeit very weird, highlight was one of the courses we had for dinner last night at my Great Aunt’s party. This was one of those “cleanse your palette” courses…we just couldn’t quite “hand”le it….

you can go to my facebook page and see some of the comments people left about it. Everyone’s families have their own little quirks don’t they? Or is it just my family that serves a scoop of sorbet on a huge ice cube shaped like a hand……..oh just mine? alright then.

Hope y’all have had a great labor day weekend!

August/September Update

4 Sep

Well….Where in the world did August go! What a flurry of activity and busyness! It seems like life is going a mile a minute and I am just along for the ride…with my hands in the air enjoying every minute of it!

What’s kept me so busy?

Well, that’s a good Question. I’ve been officially working “full-time” for 2 months. July saw me traveling quite a bit for MTW’s Re-entry, Summer & Cross Cultural Ministry Internship (pre-field training) conferences. It was so great to get to re-connect with and meet new missionaries during those times.  August brought with it getting settled in the home office. One reason I am based here in the states is so our ministry has a “face” in the office and we can be a resource for those here to know how to minister to and care for the missionary families and their kids better. There’s definitely a learning curve when it comes to being in a new office but I am enjoying being here and being “used.” I hope that my presence here is an encouragement to everyone I come across and that I can be a reminder and resource as MTW seeks to serve and care for their missionaries better.  I’ve also been able to de-brief with a family that was coming back to the states for Home Ministry Assignment from Bulgaria. I had a really good time with Cam, Zach, Mary & Ellen. I got to meet them once before at last year’s area retreat in Spain so it was great to be able to continue that relationship with them. Please be praying for them as they transition back to the states and get used to being in school here in America.  I also had the privilege of traveling to Birmingham, AL to meet up with John Chung where we were networking and recruiting for the Global Youth and Family Institute. It was fun to be back in Birmingham and share with some of the team from my former job at Briarwood and tell them about the GYFI and how they can get involved.

The rest of my time has been spent getting ready for the Latin America Area Retreat. We leave for Mexico one month from today! There are still a lot of details to hammer out but I am getting more and more excited about the trip. I am looking forward to seeing students that I haven’t seen in 4 years. Another cool thing is that we have 16 college aged MK’s coming! This is the first time we have had this many college kids coming and that is really exciting. I hope we can provide a awesome time for them and they can be encouraged and loved on. We have a team of 25 youth workers ministering to all the MK’s from 4th grade all the way through high school.  This is an all star team and some of the best youth workers I have ever met. I am always floored at how the Lord provides for the MK’s of MTW and how he brings together some great people to love on all of these kids.  Please be praying for us! Pray that the Lord would be preparing the hearts of the MK’s to be encouraged and hear the Lord’s word. Pray for the Youth Team as we prepare to go. Please pray for me as I tie up loose ends and that I wouldn’t’t forget anything!

In case you were curious and thinking…”well that’s great about all of your ministry things but what does your social life look like, Ruthanne?” Well thanks for asking… 😉 Ever since I moved to Atlanta I have been involved at All Souls Fellowship. All Souls has been such a great church for me and I have loved my community group there.  Back in January, one of the pastors (Matt Armstrong) at All Souls began the process of planting a new church in East Atlanta. Matt began to recruit Launch Team members from my community group (he was the leader of our group when I started going) and I began to pray about joining this new church. I love this neighborhood and have seen the Lord work mightily in this group already. It’s been really cool to see the Lord working amongst this group and bind us together as a community.  I didn’t know a lot of these people when I joined the team but I count many of them as dear friends now. As many of you know planting a church is no small feat. It has been amazing to see the Lord moving and providing as we move towards our launch date. We launch on September 26th! Please be praying for us at the Village Church of East Atlanta as we work towards being ready to launch.

The rest of my time is spent hanging out with my family (especially now that my mom and dad live in Atlanta now!) and trying to play trivia once a week with a group of friends. My sister and I are going to start a series on my blog so stay tuned for more info for that!.

Support Raising
The Lord continues to provide for me in overwhelming ways.  I am so thankful for how the Lord is using you to allow me to be part of this ministry.

As you may know I received a large one-time gift at the end of June that enabled me to start with the GYFM at the beginning of July. This has been a great encouragement to me and I am so thankful to be able to be working full-time.  However this money has only been committed to me for one year.  My monthly support pledges are at 51%. Part of my job now is to continue to raise new support and cultivate the supporters I already have.  I would appreciate your prayers that the Lord would continue to provide for the rest of my support.

Did you know that I have 131 fans on my facebook page?  I don’t say this to brag but to say if just 90 of those fans gave just $25 a month I would be fully funded! If you are already a support would you consider raising your pledge $10 – $20 a month? If you have been thinking about supporting me monthly and just not had a chance to do so or have any other questions please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Sweet friends and family, I am so thankful for each and every one of you. I hope that as much as you are an encouragement to me that I can be an encouragement to you.  Please let me know what is going on in your neck of the woods and how I can be praying for you.

Because of His Mercy,
